6th Approach – Mook Satsang – Art of Stillness and Effortless Connecting to Boundless Being

The whole work of Mook Satsang is to loosen our dependency on words, language, thoughts, and even actions – particularly compulsive and self-centered ones. Truth is beyond words and thoughts and can be found without any external help, when I say external it includes even our own mind. For the mind to be still it is necessary to zero down its dependency and ignore ruthlessly all its excuses. We are at the center and if we assume that mind is crucial in finding truth or fullness of life then we are mistaken. The mind is a useful instrument to interact in the world but it’s not needed to find our eternal home.

We don’t need Mind to search and connect to the center

So one intention of this post is to undo influence and importance of the mind in finding beauty and fullness of life. We can not tame our mind or free us from its fickle effects unless we ignore it’s demanding needs and sanction only what we feel ok. There are two ways to control – one is forcing it to do what we want to do and another is saying yes/no wisely what suggestions and excuses it comes up with. In the later mind gets controlled on its own and so a better approach in context to mastering the mind. Remember, a mind is a vehicle of consciousness and not consciousness itself. 

Whatever little Mook Satsang I could adopt in life, that has mothered me all through rough challenges and strengthened from within to tolerate all bumps of confusions, self-doubts, and guilt etc. I am still keen to learn depths of it as I keep missing opportunities to practice it because of my habitual mistakes like priority dilution or creative avoidance.

We don’t need any action to return to center 

  • Intuitively we know that Sat (Existence) exists everywhere: so Sat is here also.
  • Sat prevails at all times: so is present now also. 
  • Sat belongs to everyone: so is mine too.
  • Sat is present in all actions and situations: so any particular action is not needed to connect us to our Existence.

So, the golden summary is, Sat or Existence is available here, now, inside me and is mine forever and am not dependent on any action to connect to it or in other words no action needed to secure my belongingness to all pervading Existence. When something is naturally available like water to a fish then what action is needed for the connection; absolutely nothing! Thoughts of being lost and forsaken are false and imaginary coverings hiding real perspectives and ever-present connection and belongingness. This is another fundamental to grasp – no action needed to realize the truth.

All we need is right understanding and alignment to it.  

Thus, if we just become still and park conscious doing and thinking for a while we will find ourselves nowhere but right there at the center – naturally regained and sustained – popularly called moments of enlightenment. These moments are simple, normal and yet profound in creating an enhanced consciousness and deeper understanding of life. But before we live longer periods of sustained non-cooperation with the mind we get entangled in thoughts which pop up frequent enough and keep us away. Main work of Mook Satsang is handling of these thoughts which happen to us and their momentum in such a way that we let it sediment on its own rather adding to the disturbances. Otherwise, due to the weak and improper handling of thoughts during stillness breaks, we want to quickly get out of stillness and face resistance when we want to start over again next time. 

Mook Satsang: What and How it solves our core issues

Mook in Hindi means being utterly silent, not only in words but in thinking too. There are two types of thinking – one which is active and involves conscious attention, another is unconscious or sub-conscious which goes on in the background without even our noticing or wanting it. One kind happens automatically and another is what we do. In Mook Satsang we intend to 1) not do the conscious thinking for a while and 2) not cooperate or get disturbed with the thinking that is happening automatically. Neither we attach to good ones nor we repel the unwanted ones. In Mook Satsang, we attain naturally the company of Existence, just by being naturally and effortlessly still. 

Here we never try to stop the stream of thoughts or even divert it. We just let it happen.

Suppression or concentration or diversion is not the aim, not even witnessing.

Primarily we maintain non-cooperative stance with compulsive and useless thinking because our support keeps mental movies ticking and drain us of quality life energy, which dislocates us from our stillness center and also leads to a number of physical and mental weaknesses and leaves us with feelings of inner lack, insecurity, demotivation and uninspired attitude to life.

Some of the core life issues Mook Satsang addresses

Fundamentally we all by a certain age realize that all our problems are rooted in useless desires, possessiveness, feeding ego tendencies, foolishness, conditioned mind, and a limited world of me and mine.  All above is primarily attachment of one or the other kind – attachment to what we have, what we think as right, what we don’t have etc., and there is one more kind of attachment which goes unnoticed but occupies a large part of our daily routine and that is the attachment to the action itself. Details below on action related issues and how Mook Satsang eases or dissolves.

  • Attachment to fruits of action – e.g. “what’s in it for me” and if we ask how we can we help others solves the issue of selfishness and attachment to fruits of action. Attachment only affects the outcome badly and obscures the various possibilities in the way by limiting the perspectives and vision.
  • Attachment to the action itself– when one’s passion is self-serving or when we become workaholic and only feel better when in motion and do not value rest enough. Rather, see people, not so much engaged in work, as less productive and less deserving – then we are suffering from attachment to the action itself. We nourish compulsiveness quality in action and thoughts which do not let us rest easily. We attach and become dependent on action to feel worthy. This is one of the reasons why service is recommended by great seers and saints, and service is primarily for Self and not as act of mercy on others, though others may also benefit by learning the attitude of service in the process. Mook Satsang sessions reveal us the intrinsic value of rest, which is primary and action comes later.
  • The third issue is action based ego – This we can see in office, home and everywhere. This is the fight for credit, which is nothing but action-associated-ego. “I have done this and how can you or others take my credit”. We somehow want to get recognized for whatever little we do. And we feel discouraged and annoyed if somebody smartly or cheaply grabs our share of credit or undermines our efforts. This is third major issue w.r.t. actions and this affects our motivation levels for work and has kept away highly talented people from creating some real work in their life. Technically it is called doer-ship, which is one of the greatest hurdles in spiritual progress too. For this reason, spiritual seekers are trained to surrender all fruits of actions including credit to Lord’s feet. Lord doesn’t need any fruits, it is just a way to free us from useless thinking and attachment to the idea of “ I have done this / that” and remaining puffed up with tons of ego. We need to forget what we have done and keep moving. There is a big team involved in performing even the tiniest task, so taking so-called “due credit” is kind of a mistake. This team includes nature, sub-conscious mind and cosmic consciousness supporting us in all our functions and performances. Staying in gratitude and feeling a part of the team is a relatively much better attitude. This is another reason why any technique does not go far which involves action because anything that we do gets burdened with doer-ship sooner or later. Mook Satsang involves no action so dissolves ego effectively. It simply involves holding back at right junctions where we were doing/interfering in the wrong way or at wrong times and creating barriers to natural progress. We take abode at the center and leave it to nature to cleanse our mind, hence credit driven ego doesn’t get nourished.
  • Laziness to act on time due to depleted energy levels – Since stillness center is the mother of all energy, skills, and abilities. It gives deep and quality rest to ourselves, which is of higher quality than deep sleep. In fact, deep sleep + consciousness is another definition of Mook Satasng. We gain sufficiently in energy and awareness to do day to day stuff effectively and efficiently. And even our creative and contributory pursuits flourish well. The know-do gap is primarily due to energy depletion, which is easily handled by Mook Satsang. The know-do gap is a term for not being able to do what we should do. So such powerlessness issues are effectively addressed and over the period we gain wisdom and control, so as not to indulge into mistakes repetitively.

Summary again…

  • Reduces the momentum and addictive quality in our approach to action.
  • Makes us realize the value of rest and pauses.
  • It melts ego effectively. Opposite of ego is love, so proves instrumental in awakening true and unconditional love in our hearts.
  • Through energy and peace we gain help to  perform actions, services, and our creative pursuits effectively and efficiently.

How to practice Mook Satsang and When? 

Mook Satsang is an approach to connect not by doing something but by just being there – unconcerned to what happens inside or outside. Some key points to note:

  • The main challenge is we are used to doing something or the other. So we need to unlearn blocking patterns in being still and easy with us.
  • It needs kind of creating space now and then in bits and pieces of brief silences; as less as one minute or half a minute. We can attempt it anytime for tiny periods.
  • Suggested times are 5 to 10 mins just after we wake up and similarly before we sleep, and before or after major tasks – durations we can tune as we progress.
  • Sometimes we can do when we are very tired or in waiting mode, like in queue or in a lift.
  • Mook Satsang does not mean laziness in any way, rather any form of laziness is a big hurdle to it.
  • Nor it does encourage inaction. It just removes the dependency and importance of action; action is for contribution to outside world and Mook Satsang avails us deep rest, which is true service to Self, replenishment of our core needs.
  • Mook Satsang is not about getting attached to the idea of not doing anything, otherwise, that may become another headache. We need to take care NOT to consciously do anything, nor think but let any automated thoughts come and go as if we have no business with what happens. This is more like a bird flying and for few moments it stops flapping its wings and just floats. It is like floating and letting loose ourselves in the ocean of consciousness in and around us. 
  • Last but not least, do not attach to peace we get during stillness period but stay uninterrupted and uninfluenced from peace too.

Any prerequisites?

It is quite natural to have thoughts of some essential tasks, duties or actions that we decided to do but procrastinating due to laziness or tasks appearing boring or intimidating. And if we go and sit in such a state we will be hounded by these thoughts, so the prerequisite for Mook Satsang is finishing necessary tasks first.

The second prerequisite is giving up unnecessary tasks, which are.

  • Projects that creates conflicts with our wisdom. Something that we plan to do but not good for us or others in the limits of our comprehension.
  • Conflicting projects with our capacities and capabilities. Something that is beyond our capacity, such tasks also take the form of recursive thoughts and keep running in the background. This category should also be given up.

Qualification for Mook Satsang is quite straight and simple to mention and understand – do the necessary and cancel the unnecessary tasks.

Unlike any other means, this particular approach is beneficial to all kinds of people and very fundamental. It does not come in the way of any other approach or means and can be practiced along with it, moreover, will strengthen other approaches too. It can be practiced for brief moments, which add up to create an effect that can be clearly observed by us. It dissolves problems at the root – attachment of all kinds, and tendency to find pleasure, selfishness etc.

My dream is to spread the understanding, know-how, importance of Mook Satsang so that every reader adopts and embeds in daily routine, no matter how small, and gradually empower himself enough to share it with others and kids, our future. Mook Satsang is like a tonic for bringing positive change.

Frequently asked questions on Mook Satsang

These questions I have picked up from congregations, readings, and recordings of the focused groups asking Swami Ramsukhdas JI from 1990 to 2005. He used to refer Mook Satsang as Chup Sadhan ( Stillness), which means the same. Seth Jay Dayal Goenka ( Founder of Gita press) used to call this as Achintya Dhyan – Meditation of Un-thinkable. Sharnanand Ji referred it Mook Satsang. This is just for info and to bring to your notice that this has been highly recommended and appreciated by revolutionary masters, and is a potential life changing secret.

Q. When we sit for Mook Satsang then there are feelings of joy, should we ignore that too? And how can we deal with compulsive and negative thoughts?

Yes, ignore everything including exciting and joyful thoughts during Mook Satsang, do not even think about God. On other times you can contemplate but not while practicing this approach, as staying unconcerned with every thought is the key care. Thoughts good or bad takes us away from Existence and keeps us on the periphery. Just be and do nothing, think nothing. Any thought of joy or sorrow, excitement or depression – ignore all. Though there are no steps to keep in mind but just a do-not-do list to give you an idea of sub-skills involved:

  • Do not initiate or think anything consciously.
  • Do not resist any thought.
  • Do not expect to be thoughtless or desire any compulsive thought to disappear.
  • Do not welcome any thought of joy or favorable as per our make.
  • Do not react to thoughts. Our reaction comes in form of judgment. So do not judge or label any thought as good or bad.
  • Do not identify with negative or positive thoughts.
  • Negative thoughts survive longer and become strong when we resist or want those to subside quickly. Do not want so, and let them disappear at natural speed. Just know that any and every thought disappears for sure.

Just be there. Add up such silences during the day and go on building stamina for staying there in the zone of stillness.

Q. I sometimes get impatient about when these thoughts will disappear?

Like the wave of water subsides on its own, so any thought would for sure. To want or push it to subside soon or try to retain attractive ones is a stress, where we lose our mental energy and can’t do any help either. This is a mistake and all effort that we need to do is to identify such mistakes and unlearn them. This is really a great saving.

Q. Is Mook Satsang same as Dhyan (Meditation) or Samadhi ( prolonged meditation)?

Mook Satsang is the natural and highest state of consciousness. In Dhyan or Samadhi one takes help of mind and sooner or later comes back to normalcy. Mook Satsang loosens the strings of attachment, empowers us with peace and inner strength. Mook Satsang is symbolic of all three streams of human accomplishments – Creative power, intuitive intelligence and emotional wellness. Dhyan and Samadhi are helpful steps towards evolution too but Mook Satsang comprises all advantages of Dhyan/Samadhi and is a more direct way to regain wholeness.

Q. When it is so natural, easy then what are the difficulties involved?

It is natural and easy but we do slip from importance of it. Many of us may not be even aware of our natural state is the highest state and moreover, when we get exposed to such information by the grace of great masters then also we do not hold on to it as prioirty thing in life. As a result, we do not start or slip quite often and give up, and over a period develop inertia for doing it even for super small periods. This needs no action but commitment and perseverence, and a sense of purpose in life. If we follow such preserved secrets of Sages then we are bound to become Einsteins of consciousness.

Q. Is there a reason for ongoing thought streams in the mental world, particualrly when we sit for meditation or Mook Satsang – though we are not thinking, not wanting to think?

During the day we attach to so many things in two ways – likes or dislikes, which creates impressions and lock those to our subconscious minds. This happens automatically and such deposits gather and get space and time to evaporate by the gracefully designed process by Nature to unburden us, so these thoughts surface up and actually are in process of getting destroyed. But we, by mistake, identify with these and start thinking, mulling over or sometimes enjoying, playing and thus support their continuity in our inner space. This depletes our energy and we feel sad, depressed and then consider certain thoughts as the cause of our miseries. But in relaity the cause of miseries is our identification and attachment to thoughts which deposits likes and dislikes in deeper space of mind and being.

Q. Can we chant some Mantra or do something to reduce the count of thoughts or avoid any negative thoughts. As sometimes making busy seems to solve issues to some extent.

Lets understand this very carefully. Whatever thoguhts do occur those happen automatically and are at deeper level. Whatever we do, is at the surafce level and superficial. Both have not matching frequencies so it doesn’t help really, it may suppress/divert things for sometime but sooner or later thoguhts will come again. That is Nature’s process to cleanse our minds and make us lighter of unconscious elements. So why not let it happen. We should focus more on staying alert during day to day behaviour so that we dont deposit likes/dislikes impressions, that is one care we can take but nothing that we do can help in suppressing what happens. One who has stressed himself in many techniques and eventually failed, practicing Mook Satsang will bring Eureka moments in his life.

Q. How long we will have to un-practice before we get thoughtlessness?

Though we get good and easy control over mind and may be thoughtlessness too but we don’t have to attach to it or invite it. This is an another fundamental thing to understand and even if somehow we landed in thoughtlessness then also we need to stay uninterrupted. Because just like attaching to any thought brings us out and away from the center so the attachment to peace. Peace is quite important when compared to a though-full state but should not be valued during sessions. And we should stick to fundamentals – which is ignore what happens in mind – thought or no thought.

Disconnecting, ignoring and non-cooperative stances are key in Mook Satsang.

Somehow when we practice this then the peace of pure thoughtlessness may also extend for longer periods without we desiring it. And that is the reason why it is so natural and more important than meditation or Samadhi. It has inbuilt ingredients of Gyan-Yog and Dhyan-Yog.

Q. Is Mook Satang quite close to practicing present moment awareness?

Meditation is quite close tp present moment practice but not Mook Satsang. When we allow meditaion to happen and do not even bother whether it happnes or not then we are closer to Mook Satsang. For example, let’s take mindfulness meditation and see how it differs. This is just for understanding and not to undermine the importance of any means of personal growth and wellness. Mook Satsang nourishes all means and approaches and opposes none.

  • In Meditation, we accompany mind and try to empty it. In Mook Satsang, we disconnect with thought / Mind itself and ignore it whether it is silent or noisy.
  • In Mook Satsang, we do not evaluate our progress by the degree of silence but through how well disconnected we remained in all ups and downs of mind.
  • In meditation / present moment practice we use mind and focus attention in the moment which helps in creating peace and narrows the work area, while in Mook Satsang we ignore thoguhts and do not control attention to be in present or future or past. We let go, ignore impartially, and habituate to not react to, not attach to, not label any thoughts of prresent, past, future, likes, dislikes, good, or bad. Staying unconcerned, uninterrupted is attitude we need to develop for success in Mook Satsang.

This is not to discourage anyone who practices meditation or present moment awareness but just to share what I exprerinced for many years. In present moment practice, it can be tiring at times when thoughts are compulsive but ignoring and staying with zero concern towards thoughts at least doesn’t involves concious efforts and as a result, unconscious thoughts settle on their own. I have found it most natural and least energy consuming, in fact it consumes zero energy when done properly.

Call to action 

This is the most important post in my view and experience for enabling positive change and inviting grace in life. That is why it grew long and one may find repetitions as well.

Plan it well and embed in routine. Develop it in phases, focus first on the sub-skills one by one so that you may bring this gradually in your attitude itself making it an integral part of life.

Mook Satsang Sub-skills list again:

  • Initiating pauses and silences
  • Ignoring so called good or bad thoughts impartially.
  • Maintaining undisturbed and non-cooperative stance to thoughts popping in and out of mind.
  • Not personalizing with thoughts.
  • Non-judgemental and non-labeling attitude.
  • Not reacting to thoughts happening out there and losing the inner center.
  • Thoughts occur in mind and not in us, we are separate. Do not assume connection or identification with them.
  • Not sticking to peace or any by-products, our greatest benefit is inbuilt in doing this properly, so we should do it with love and care without expecting anything out of it.
  • Not wanting thoughtlessness or peace, nor pushing out any unwanted thoughts. Non-resiting attitude to unwanted thoughts lets the natural process of cleansing happen smoothly.

Things like grace, inner strength will make more sense if we understand and gradually weave Mook Satsang in our life.
